The path of the sword is not so different from the path of the saw.

There is a code I keep returning to. It was taught to me a long time ago.

It wasn't written for builders. But it may as well have been.

Bushidō.

The Way of the Warrior. Seven virtues.

Gi — Integrity.

Rei — Respect.

Yuki — Courage.

Makoto — Honesty and Sincerity.

Chūgi — Loyalty.

Meiyō — Honor.

Jin — Compassion.

The samurai carried these not just in battle, but in their breath.

Every action, every pause, every bow.

It wasn't for applause.

It was for alignment.

And when I walk onto a jobsite and watch how people move, how they speak, how they clean up after themselves or don't, I see echoes of that code in the craft.

Integrity shows up when no one else does.

Respect is built into the way a broom is leaned or a new apprentice is spoken to.

Courage is found in the voice that says,

"This wasn't done right, but I'll fix it."

Honesty is in the clear estimate, the hard conversation,

the unvarnished truth about what it will take.

Loyalty lives in those who stand by their word even when it costs them.

Honor is what you feel when you point to a building and quietly say, "I helped raise that."

And compassion?

Compassion is the hidden glue, the decision to teach, not shame. To lift, not laugh.

To care, even when no one asked you to.

These virtues don't live in a toolbox. They live in the hands that hold it.

The path of the sword is not so different from the path of the saw.

Both require discipline.

Both demand awareness.

as Doug Marcaida might say "Both will cut", but only one will shape.

And so we sharpen ourselves daily.

Not just for strength,

but for stillness.

Not just to cut,

but to craft.

A good tool lasts.

A sharp one leaves a mark.

But the best tools are those that are wielded with presence.

Field Note:

You won't find Bushidō in the contract documents. But you can live it in the margins. In the way you sweep. In the way you speak. In the way you leave the space better than you found it.
