Getting Through the Day: The Field Philosopher's guide to Jobsite Progress

The site does not ask for inspiration.

It asks for presence.

Hard hat on.

Drawings open.

One condition addressed.

Productivity on a jobsite is not measured by how fast you work.

It is defined by following the proper sequence.

Know what's next. Resist skipping ahead, even when tired.

When the day starts to run away from you, focus on what's in front of you.

Check a dimension.

Mark a detail.

Clear a path.

Make one thing ready for the trade that follows.

Do not argue with the schedule.

Do not romanticize the delay.

Work the piece in front of you.

Some days you pour concrete.

Some days you move dirt.

Some days, you just keep the project from slipping backward.

By the time tools are down, ask only this:

Did the work move forward because I was here?

That is progress.

That is enough for today.

Field Note

Progress is rarely dramatic.

Most days, it looks like keeping one thing from going wrong.
